Free and Reduced LSAT Prep

One of the reasons the legal profession lacks diversity is because it has historically been a field accessible to those with resources while shutting out those who don’t. A prime example of this is LSAT prep—it’s expensive as hell. But you can get access to high-quality LSAT prep without draining your bank account if you’re willing to do the research. And guess what? I’ve already done the research for you.

I’m making this guide because when I first started using 7Sage, I actually paid for it. Why? Because I had no idea they offered a fee waiver. It wasn’t plastered all over their site; it was something I had to dig up separately. After realizing I’d unnecessarily dropped $600, I decided to compile a list of LSAT prep companies that offer fee waivers or significant discounts so that you don't make the same mistake I did.

LSAT Prep Companies That Offer Fee Waivers or Discounts

  1. 7Sage: Offers an exceptional fee waiver program. With an active LSAC fee waiver, you can access their Core + Live courses for just $1. They also provide a 30% discount on tutoring services.

  2. Magoosh: Provides free 12-month LSAT prep access to students with an active LSAC fee waiver.

  3. LSAT Lab: Discounts up to 50% on their Premium and Classroom plans if you have an LSAC fee waiver.

  4. Blueprint Prep: Offers reduced tuition scholarships for LSAC fee waiver students. Just email your fee waiver approval to lsat@blueprintprep.com.

To qualify for these programs, you typically need to:

  • Have an approved LSAC fee waiver.

  • Submit proof of your fee waiver to the specific company.

  • Meet basic eligibility requirements (usually income-based).

These programs are designed to level the playing field and make LSAT prep accessible to those who need it most.

Additional Tips to Cut Costs

1. Gently Used Prep Books

Sites like Amazon or eBay are goldmines for affordable LSAT prep books. Sometimes, you’ll even find near-new copies for a fraction of the original cost.

2. Pre-Law Organizations

Check if pre-law organizations on your campus partner with test prep companies. They often offer discounts or even free materials.

3. Free Competitive Programs

Programs like SEO Catalyst and Harvard Future Young Leaders in Law offer free LSAT prep for high-achieving students. These programs usually include live, synchronous classes and are highly competitive—but absolutely worth the effort to apply for.

Be Bold: Creative Fundraising Ideas

If you’re a broke college student (been there), you’ve got to think outside the box. Here’s where it gets interesting:

  • Part-Time Jobs and Fundraising: If traditional routes are more your speed, pick up a part-time job or organize a small fundraiser. Hustle however you need to.

  • Leverage Your Community: Ask your church, local organizations, or even professors for support. People are far more willing to help ambitious young folks than you’d think.

  • Email Lawyers in Your Area: Let’s say you’re at Florida State University. Email every lawyer in Tallahassee and ask for a $50 donation to fund your LSAT prep. Your goal might be $500 to buy a premium program like 7Sage or Blueprint. Most lawyers—especially those who understand your struggle—will support your ambition. Just make sure your email or LinkedIn message is professional, classy, and clear. It was actually a Black lawyer at a panel I attended that said, “I guarantee if you email every Black lawyer in Tallahassee that one of us would pay for it” so i’m taking his word for it! If you have a fee waiver there is no reason to do this, but if you don't and you don't wish to pay for it yourself, do what you gotta do!

  • Network at Events: Attend networking events for lawyers of color. Introduce yourself, build connections, and follow up. This approach is far better than cold-emailing strangers.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to come from money to succeed. You just need grit, resourcefulness, and a little creativity. The legal profession has enough gatekeeping as it is; don’t let the cost of LSAT prep hold you back. There are people and programs out there ready to help you—all you have to do is ask.

So, whether you’re scouring eBay for gently used books or emailing every lawyer in your city, remember this: you can do anything you set your mind to. Get out there and make it happen!
